Recurring machine tool deliveries from Ohio to Czechia: rail to Newark, ocean to Rotterdam, road to Brno — under one tracking number.
The client used three different providers, one per leg. When a delivery ran late, nobody could name the cause: each was accountable only for its own section.
We moved the chain to a through multimodal service with a single waybill and a single tracking number. All three legs became internal stages of one shipment.

The problem
A classic pattern: the rail operator handed the container over on time, the liner shipped it on the next sailing, the haulier collected four days after arrival. Formally nobody breached anything, and the delivery was nine days late.
The effect
The client valued the seven-day reduction in average transit only moderately. Narrowing the spread from 19 days to six, however, allowed an 18% cut in safety stock, releasing roughly EUR 340,000 in working capital.

Average transit fell from 34 to 27 days and the spread between the fastest and slowest delivery from 19 days to six. It was the predictability, not the average, that let the client cut safety stock.
