Moving a transformer from Italy to a Romanian substation: a sea leg, a modular platform and temporary removal of overhead lines.
Dimensions of 8.4 × 3.6 × 4.1 m and 96 tonnes ruled out any standard routing. The final 22 km ran through a town with trolleybus lines at 4.6 m.
A sea leg to Constanța, then an SPMT modular platform. For the urban section we agreed a night window and a temporary power-down with three spans of overhead line removed.

The sea leg was simple. The difficulty began where the motorway ended: a narrow street, an 18-metre turning radius and overhead lines. We modelled the passage in 3D and found we needed 24 cm less platform height — which is exactly what dictated the SPMT choice.
The night
The city power-down was agreed from 01:00 to 05:00. In that window three spans had to come down, the platform had to pass and the network had to be restored. The move itself took two hours forty minutes; the rest went to restoration.
The transformer was set on its foundation four days ahead of plan. Shock recorder data confirmed a peak of 1.8 g against a 3 g limit.
